Fantasmagoría

Synopsis In the Chilean Atacama desert there are the vestiges of the last salitreras, the saltpetre deposits where thousands of poor families worked, exploited, for more than a century: a massacre that made more than 2,000 victims. Today, the inhabitants witness the decline of the industrialization of saltpetre in the driest place on Earth, where real ghost towns are surviving, carrying an indissoluble memory.

Director’s bio-filmography Juan Francisco González (1989) studied cinema at EICTV (Cuba) and Ateliers Varan (París). With the MAFI collective he co-created the documentary films Propaganda (2013) and Dios (2019), presented at Berlinale Talents. He is editor and co-producer of Franco García Becerra’s feature film Raìz (Through Rocks and Clouds), selected at Berlinale 2024, where it was awarded a special mention in the Generation Kplus section. Fantasmagoría had its international premiere in Doclisboa.
