WTFF6 – Talk
May 12, 2022, 9 PM, Porto Burci
Starting in 2012 as a monthly newsletter about work in China for the Italian trade union, over the years “Made in China Journal” developed into an international leading publication about the Chinese politics and society, particularly about issues related to workers’ rights, the civil society, and human rights.
This magazine, curated by a collective of young researchers, is now an umbrella publication for a whole series of actions aimed at bridging the gap between the scholarly community and the general public about Chinese issues. Their initiatives include a series of books on current events, such as the situation in Xinjiang, the ideology of the Chinese Communist Party, and the internationalisation of Chinese capital, two documentary films about the situation of workers in China and Cambodia, and “The People’s Map of Global China”, a new interactive map where a global network of researchers and NGOs collaborate in tracing the social as well as environmental impact of Chinese investments abroad.
All these projects are openly and freely accessible, in an attempt of creating a new space for discussion beyond the logic of trade that governs a wide part of today’s academic publishing.
The project is presented by Ivan Franceschini, chief editor and researcher, and Tommaso Facchin, a filmmaker and art director.
On May 12 at 6.30 PM the authors present at Cinema Odeon – Nuova Sala Lampertico their film Boramey – Ghosts in the Factory.
